I personally plan to create a SQL ERD shape set to facilitate in generating SQL from within Dia. I think that we could get a lot of bang-for-buck if one export option was to export via pipe to an external program (like tedia2sql). Then, Dia wouldn't need a "SQL output" plugin. It would just need to save to an output stream.

For Example:

  • the Dia Editor plugin that allows for code generation (need the link here)
  • rumored plugin for SQL output (PhiloVivero: It doesn't exist. For now, we use tedia2sql)
  • status of embedded links in the diagrams...fact or fiction (PhiloVivero: I believe it's fiction)

I would wager that Dia is, for now, simply a layout tool. It isn't a Visio replacement yet. Until Dia completes its GNOME1-->GNOME2 transformation, most real development will be halted.

I guess I should qualify this: since Lars, Hans, et al are working primarily on the GNOME2 port, and since the CVS is in such a state of flux, those of us wanting to other development are developing against a moving target.

After that transformation, I bet a lot of these features will be able to be put into place.
